Aims/Objectives:

The Alternative Fuel Initiative is a partnership between Fiat, the Italian Ministry for the Environment, and Unione Petrolifera.

The partnership aims to promote low-emission methane-powered vehicles and reduce air pollution in Italy's cities.

   

Measurable results and specific targets:

The partnership aims to put into circulation more than 300,000 methane powered vehicles by 2005.

   

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

The initiative will provide the technology and infrastructure necessary to develop a market for methane-powered vehicles.

The Ministry will provide incentives for the construction of methane gas filling stations and for the purchase of methane-powered vehicles.

Unione Petrolifera will support the development of a methane distribution network.

Fiat will broaden its line of methane-powered vehicles and continue to invest in research and development on a complete range of cars with alternative drive systems.

Fiat will invest more than 280 million euros in this partnership.
