Power to Transform: Sustainable Energy Strategies for the WSSD - The UK Business Council for Sustainable Energy (UKBCSE), working alongside DEFRA and the FCO, have organised Power to Transform which will be the first major event in the UK specifically looking at the energy component to the WSSD Conference.

Nordic Partnership talks Sustainable Development

The Fourth Preparatory Committee Meeting for the World Summit on Sustainable Development
27 May – 7 June 2002 – Bali, Indonesia
PrepCom IV, the fourth preparatory meeting for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, will take place at the Bali International Convention Center. The meeting will include a 2-day segment from 27 – 29 May that will bring leaders from business together with representatives from governments and civil society organizations. This segment will allow all groups to provide constructive input into the summit preparatory process.

Are We Minding the Gap? Business and the Challenge of Sustainable Development

The International Finance Corporation and Financial Times Conferences are organising a one day event on sustainable development in the private sector. The aim of the conference is to give business leaders a better understanding of the increasing role sustainability is playing in the private sector and to demonstrate strategies and practices showing the value of sustainability to business.

Africa Economic Summit 2002

The 12th Summit of the World Economic Forum in Africa will be held in association with the NEPAD Steering Committee and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The Summit will provide a platform for a frank, outcome oriented exchanges on the proposed compact between Africa, its international partners, business and civil society.

Stockholm to highlight urban sustainable solutions

The four-day event will focus on the positive effects of modern technology, creative management and communitybased solutions to assess urban sustainable development worldwide. Ethical Investment Management Forum 2002
18 - 19 June 2002 - London, UK
This Euromoney Seminar will feature many leaders from the socially responsible investment community, and those responsible for the introduction, development and maintenance of ethical products.

UNEP FI Regional Outreach Event: Countries with Economies in Transition
24 – 25 June 2002 – Budapest, Hungary
This roundtable conference will address the business case for sustainable development and foreign direct investment within transition economies in Central and Eastern Europe. It is the fourth in a series of United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiatives Regional Outreach events.

G-8 Summit

G-8 Leaders will meet to discuss strengthening global economic growth, building a new partnership for Africa’s development, and fighting terrorism, as well as review progress on global poverty reduction.

The Bi-annual Conference on Security, Stability, Development and Cooperation (CSSDCA) Standing Conference of Heads of State and Government will be dealt with during the 2002 African Union Summit.

XIV International AIDS Conference
7 – 12 July – Barcelona, Spain
The theme for the conference is "Knowledge and Commitment for Action" reflecting a focus on translating the knowledge gained from science and experience into action at all levels.

Energy, Industry and the World Summit on Sustainable Development
18 July 2002 - Washington DC, USA.
This roundtable event co-convened by the Business Council for Sustainable Energy and the US Agency for International Development will focus on business involvement in sustainable development, highlighting industry's activities as they relate to WSSD. Case studies will be presented by representatives of key private equity funds, business developers, industrial utility groups, technology manufacturers and others to illustrate the various roles that clean energy and business plays in sustainable development today.

World Water Week: A Global Platform for Dialogue

World Water week is an interdisciplinary platform to focus global attention on key water issues, facilitate dialogue, seek constructive solutions, highlight outstanding achievements, and inspire future leaders.

Local Government Session - Local Action moves the World
17 - 30 August 2002 - Crowne Plaza, Sandton, South Africa
The Local Government Session, Local Action Moves the World, will open on August 27 and run for three days. It is designed for Local Government to express its position and expectations vis-ΰ-vis the Summit's outcomes and to interact with national and observer delegations to strengthen its case. It is being organised by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) in cooperation with other major international local government associations and United Nations agencies.

Civil Society Global Forum
19 August - 4 September - NASREC, Johannesburg, South Africa
The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) Civil Society Secretariat was launched in April 2001 to act as a management resource to prepare South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world for the Global Forum. The WSSD Global Forum takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 19 August to 4 September 2002. More than 50 000 delegates from around the world are expected to attend.

Implementation Conference: Stakeholder Action for our Common Future

The Implementation Conference is seeking to initiate and strengthen collaborative stakeholder implementation of sustainable development. As such it is a stepping-stone in a long-term process, which Stakeholder Forum started in the autumn of 2001. Within the framework of type 1 & type 2 outcome documents for the Johannesburg Summit, the Implementation Conference is developing type 2 outcomes: partnership initiatives to further the implementation of the sustainable agreements.

IUCN environment CENTRE

The Green Web in Action" exhibit, more than 100 workshops and side events, including joint WBCSD-IUCN activities like the workshop on "Investing for Sustainable Development: Getting the Conditions Right" and the launch of "Business and Biodiversity: The Handbook for Corporate Action". The IUCN Environment Center will include as a highlight the Future Dialogues, where key leaders of the world will comment on future trends related to environment and sustainable development issues

Summit Institute for Sustainable Development (SISD)
26 August - 6 September 2002 – Johannesburg, South Africa
The Smithsonian Institution, in collaboration with the South Africa Department of Education, has created the SISD. The SISD will mobilise WSSD participants to present formal mini-courses on key Sustainable Development issues that will provide background, tools, and approaches for implementation of sustainable development policies.

Water Dome
26 August - 3 September 2002 – Johannesburg, South Africa
The main objective of the WaterDome is to create water awareness by organising a dialogue between stakeholders at the Dome, located in Northgate, Johannesburg - to be temporarily re-named the WaterDome. From 28 August - 3 September 2002, parallel to the World Summit, stakeholders from public and private organisations in the water sector will get the opportunity to launch and exhibit their water-related activities, policies, initiatives, new technologies, products etc.

Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development

The objective of the event is to provide a platform for highlighting the critical contributions of science, technology and innovation to sustainable development. Attendance is free, with compulsory registration/booking.

Volkswagen Day and Technical Exhibition

Volkswagen will hold a one day conference on business and sustainability on 28 August.
A technical exhibition addressing energy efficiency in the automotive sector and other aspects of Volkswagen's sustainability performance will continue through 4 September.

Energy for Sustainable Development
