Aims/Objectives:

The From the Rhoen for the Rhoen initiative promotes cooperation and mutual support among local agriculture, crafts, and gastronomy businesses. The initiative address the three pillars of sustainable development.

Environment: saveguarding the Rhoen cultural landscape;

Society: promoting awareness of where food products come from;

Economy: generating employment and income.

Initiative linked to Agenda 21: chapter I.4; II.14; II.15; II.30; II.32 and to United Nations Millennium Declaration: chapter IV. Protecting our common environment.

   

Measurable results and specific targets:

Increased percentage of regional products used in gastronomy; consumers show increased awareness and interest for local products and dishes.

Indicators used to measure success include the percentage of regional products used in gastronomy, and the number of member businesses participating in the from the Rhoen for the Rhoen initiative.

Progress is reported through brochures and explanation of concept in the restaurant menus.

   

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

The initiative was started and is implemented by partner businesses; it is supported by the biosphere reserve administration.

From the Rhoen for the Rhoen is a self-financing initiative.

The initiative cooperates with other sustainable develoment initiatives at the local level including Rhoen Sheep Initiative and Rhoen Apple initiative. It is linked to international sustainable development projects through the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves World Network, Agenda 21, and the Millennium Declaration.
