Clean and Green Communities

Aims/Objectives:

To rehabilitate the environment in South Africa's informal settlements and townships, through the encouragement, education and empowerment of the identified communities.

To reduce unemployment during the project cycle and beyond.

To strengthen the relationships between communities and local authorities.

To empower communities to monitor and manage an effective, affordable and sustainable waste system.

Measurable results and specific targets:

46 communities and over 140, 000 households have been serviced by 641 people employed through the Clean and Green Programme, resulting in the social, environmental and economic improvement of their communities.

This labour intensive project has created hundreds of waste collection jobs in the target communities.

Extra income is also generated through recycling of glass, paper, plastics and organic waste.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

Clean and Green assists the local authorities to implement, or improve a present substandard, waste management system and to integrate the programme into its service infrastructure.

The programme further addresses social development in previously disadvantaged communities. Where profound shortages of waste collection services and a lack of environmental awareness are prevalent, the programme encourages communities to see waste collection as an income generator.
