Aims/Objectives: |
| To rehabilitate the environment in South Africa's informal settlements and townships, through the encouragement, education and empowerment of the identified communities. | | To reduce unemployment during the project cycle and beyond. | | To strengthen the relationships between communities and local authorities. | | To empower communities to monitor and manage an effective, affordable and sustainable waste system. | |
Measurable results and specific
targets: |
| 46 communities and over 140, 000 households have been serviced by 641 people employed through the Clean and Green Programme, resulting in the social, environmental and economic improvement of their communities. | | This labour intensive project has created hundreds of waste collection jobs in the target communities. | | Extra income is also generated through recycling of glass, paper, plastics and organic waste. | |
Implementation mechanisms
and further application: |
| Clean and Green assists the local authorities to implement, or improve a present substandard, waste management system and to integrate the programme into its service infrastructure. | | The programme further addresses social development in previously disadvantaged communities. Where profound shortages of waste collection services and a lack of environmental awareness are prevalent, the programme encourages communities to see waste collection as an income generator. | |
