IUCN’s mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. With its new Business & Biodiversity Initiative, IUCN brings this mission to the private sector. The initiative aims are

To promote triple-bottom-line biodiversity strategies for business;

To promote business plans and financial strategies for protected areas and sustainable landscapes;

To promote investments in projects with triple-bottom line biodiversity business plans.

Corporate Biodiversity Strategies: Published Biodiveristy and Business: A Guide for the Private Sector in 1997 in co-operation with the World Business Council on Sustainable Develpment (WBCSD). Current activities include the production of new business tools on biodiversity in partnership with the WBCSD and Earthwatch Institute Europe to be launched at 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Business Plans for Nature: Working in partnership with UNDP country offices in Eastern Europe to study biodiversity incentives and financial mechanisms. Partner in Conservation Alliance working on production of Training Guide for Conservation Finance Mechanisms.

Biodiversity Business Investments: Developing the Kijani Initiative, a new private equity facility for biodiversity business in Africa, in partnership with International Finance Corporation. Related investment projects are underway in central and eastern Europe.

Business and Biodiversity Library: The Initiative maintains a wealth of material on business & biodiversity stored in IUCN's Biodiversity Economics Library at biodiversityeconomics.org/business.
