Aims/Objectives: |
|
| The Western Power Greening Challenge aims to: | | Improve nature conservation and biodiversity values in the Hotham-Williams Catchment through large scale revegetation using local species; | | Assist in land and water conservation through integrated planting of local species throughout the landscape; | | Encourage rural/city links and empower corporate and community groups to improve their own environment through an innovative revegetation project. | |

Measurable results and specific
targets: |
|
| The original award winning Greening Challenge involved Western Power people and their families and friends working with landcarers to plant one million native seedlings on salinity affected farmland in WA's south west by the year 2000. | | The original 'Challenge' was achieved one year ahead of schedule in 1999. | | To date, more than 5,000 volunteers have planted native seedlings on degraded land during winter months; 75% of volunteers return year after year. | | On average more than 500,000 seedlings planted each year. | | Over 80 species have been used to restore natural diversity and so far survival rates have been 85%. | | The 'challenge' has been a catalyst for other revegetation efforts in the area. | |

Implementation mechanisms
and further application: |
|
| The success of the Greening Challenge attracted the support of the Commonwealth Natural Heritage Trust in 1998, which provided a $1.68M grant to expand on the existing project. | |
