Aims/Objectives: |
| London Remade is a £20 million private public partnership (with £5.4 million Single Regeneration Funding), representing London's determination to curb the Capital's waste crisis and help the city meet the government's recycling targets. | | Tackling London's over-reliance on natural resources, such as land mass and energy consumption and providing sustainable waste management solutions to help London reduce its waste production. | | Provide a business solution to London's waste crisis, by developing new markets for products made from recycled materials and improving the supply of recycled materials. | | Create jobs and generate wealth for the city, by placing a value on the Capital's waste. | | Encourage private sector investment in processing capacity. | |
Measurable results and specific
targets: |
| To divert 250,000 tonnes of waste from landfill into recycled products by 2004. | | To generate £350,000 worth of expenditure on recycled products. | | Four levels of the Green Procurement Code include: engaging signatories in discussion about recycled products; holding specific one-on-one discussions with signatories and researching opportunities for specifying and purchasing recycled products; providing base line data about recycled products and specifications; and committing to measurable targets for specifying and buying recycled products. | | Quarterly progress reports detailing outputs achieved are submitted to GLA and Shanks First. | | Monthly newsletters, annual report and press releases will report results, achievements and key learnings to stakeholders. | |
Implementation mechanisms
and further application: |
| Launched to public March 2002 and ongoing brokerage service between Green Procurement Code signatories (120 to date) and suppliers of products (40 to date) continues. | | Capitalise on London's organisations committment to corporate social responsibility and environmental performance. | | London Remade is working with suppliers to improve product range and marketing information. | | Commission research for reprocessing capacity to bring new products to market and source potential secondary markets. | | Resources and relationship-building activities have been developed to support the Green Procurement Code including a literature pack, website, executed advertising campaign, quarterly network and steering committee meetings, signatory workshops and a seminar in January 2003. | | Any region of the world with waste could replicate London Remade's Green Procurement Code business model, by making a direct connection between the waste produced and identifying sustainable markets for products made from this waste. | |
