Partners:

WWF

Earthwatch

Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI)

Aims/Objectives:

Investing in Nature is a US$50 million partnership funded by HSBC, working with Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Earthwatch, and WWF.

Investing in Nature's aims are to mobilise 2,000 HSBC staff to become active conservationists;

To support environmental field research on five continents;

To initiate 2,000 local environmental projects around the world; and

To train 200 young scientists and conservationists from developing countries.

Measurable results and specific targets:

To provide the equivalant of 100 years' worth of environmental research, making a real contribution to conservation and to our understanding of mankind's impact on the environment.

To reach the targets of mobilising 2000 HSBC staff, initiating 2000 local environmental projects around the world, and training 200 young scientists from developing countries.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

2,000 HSBC staff will volunteer on Earthwatch conservation projects. On returning from the field, the HSBC volunteers will lead a conservation project in their local community.

200 scientists and conservationists from developing countries will be trained on Earthwatch research projects.

HSBC will invest US$16 million in the Earthwatch partnership.

The partnership will create a network of conservation champions among HSBC staff and will deliver the equivalent of a century of environmental research. Also, increasing scientific knowledge in developing countries will give local communities the skills to protect their environment.

HSBC's environmental policy is based on the United Nations Environment Programme's Statement by Financial Institutions on Environment and Sustainable Development, of which HSBC is a founding signatory.
