Aims/Objectives: |
| The Endangered Wildlife Trust conserves endangered species and ecosystems in southern Africa by: | | Initiating and funding research and conservationn action programmes; | | Preventing species extinctions and maintaining biodiversity; | | Supporting natural resource management; | | Communicating the principles of sustainable living through education and awareness programmes to the broadest possible constituency. | |
Measurable results and specific
targets: |
| Initiated a range of biodiversity conservation project partnerships including the following, where we invite the involvement of new partners: | | Community-based crane and wetland conservation in southern Africa, an interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers from Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, North America and Zambia to establish a cohesive crane and habit management regime for the region. | | Operation Oxpecker aims to restore healthy populations of two species of Oxpeckers that have been seriously impacted by the use of pesticides to control ticks on domestic livestock in southern Africa. Partnerships with agrochemical companies will result in only Oxpecker-friendly products being distributed in the region. Resource-poor farmers will be the greatest beneficiaries of a successful programme. | | The Rietvlei Wildlife Breeding Centre is a partnership with the Johannesburg Zoo and additional partners to develop the Zoo's Rietvlei Farm in order to provide breeding facitilities, "spelling" facilities, quarantine facilities and research opportunities that will be of lasting benefit and value. | |

Implementation mechanisms
and further application: |
| Projects are mainly implemented by dedicated working groups, such as the Conservation Leadership Group, the Carnivore Conservation Group, the Wildlife Biological Resource Centre, and others. | | The EWT will display partnership efforts at the IUCN Conservation Centre at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. | |
