Aims/Objectives: |
|
| Bikes for Africa will help the mayor of Johannesburg promote his objective for the city - "A Johannesburg where our children play safetly in the streets, where our families and friends can live, work and play." | | As part of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, ICLEI will proclaim the bicycle as 'The Sustainable Solution for All People Everywhere'. | | Bicycles are non-polluting, promote good health, and can improve the quality of life in urban and rural communities. | |

Measurable results and specific
targets: |
|
| 25 bicycles will be presented to the city of Johannesburg. The bicycles will be used by the various departments of Johannesburg’s city government, where they will replace motorised vehicles. This will demonstrate the city’s commitment to health, and the environment, while reducing transportation expenditures. | | 1000 bicycles will be distributed to youth in the city of Johannesburg. This will launch the Bicycle Refurbishing Initiative, a partnership led by Velo Mondial. This initiative collects bicycles from Europe and the USA and ships them to South Africa where newly established shops will refurbish and sell the bikes, creating jobs and encouraging the use of environmentally-friendly transport. | |
