Aims/Objectives: |
|
| The Rural-Life Project is a quiet agricultural revolution aimed to promote modern farming methods among the rural farmers, to provide opportunities for sustainable self employment for the people and to uplift their overall economic well being. | | The project took off fully in our OML 58 communities with the establishment of the Seed Multiplication center at Oboburu in 1994. It focused mainly on the multiplication of improved varieties of the predominantly staple food crops of the people and the introduction of new ones not previously cultivated in the area. Among the basic food crops so far multiplied include maize, cassava, seed yams, pineapple, plantain and oil palm seedlings, while crops such as cowpea (beans) and rice not formerly cultivated, have been introduced to the area through demonstration and extension services. | |

Measurable results and specific
targets: |
|
| The Rural-Life Agricultural Programme has made tremendous impact across the land covering sixteen oil communities. Since 1995, about 3024 farmers have received various farm inputs including seedlings, fertilizer and insecticides, while a total of 5011 farmers have so far received expert and technical advice from our agricultural field extension offices situated in these communities. About 39 persons from the communities are fully engaged by the company at the centre, while thousands of others are self-employed on their individual plots. | | Education : the project has also popularised the teaching and learning of agricultural science in secondary school within the communities, through the extension of farm inputs and agro-technical services. | | Diversification : the project extended itself to fisheries and snail farming. Within a short period, a total of 8017 fingerlings of "Nile Tilapia" could be distributed to 19 fish farmers. | |
