Where:

Geneva, Switzerland

Time period:

1999-2006 (Phase 3: 2002-2006)

Web link:

Partners:

Working Group: 10 Cement Industry Participants

Sponsor Group

Assurance Group

Aims/Objectives:

To help the cement industry to play a full role in a more sustainable future, and to provide the industry with tools to make this happen.

Identify key sustainability issues for the cement industry.

Assess the industry’s current performance.

Provide a vision for the future and recommendations for cement companies and their stakeholders to move forward.

Measurable results and specific targets:

1999 - Initiative was set up with 3 phases: research, action planning and results. The research phase identified and examined all the sustainability issues facing the industry over the next 20 years. The research paper was delivered early in 2000 and was refined to specify 13 sub-studies for further research.

2002 May - Released the final Battelle report, along with the 13 sub-studies.

2002 July - Ten working group members to release their response to the Battelle’s report, in the form of an Agenda for Action.

2002 - Produced a guide for cement plant managers on managing and improving local stakeholder communications

2002 - Produced a standard protocol for measuring and reporting CO2 emissions; endorsed by the UNFCCC and WRI, among others.

2002-2004 - Anticipate that a code of good practice for managing waste materials in cement kilns will also be developed.

In the longer term the project will build on the Agenda for Action, which represents a plan for the first five years. A process of engagement and cooperative work with an increasing number of the industry’s stakeholders will begin after the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

The WBCSD provides the process, quality control and outreach competency for the initiative. It offers a credible neutral platform for companies in an industry sector to jointly investigate sustainability challenges. It coordinates the work program, ensuring quality control throughout. Importantly, the WBCSD also markets and disseminates the output of these projects, generating momentum for change in policy and behavior across whole industry sectors.

The initiative is almost entirely funded by the working group members, but also from other sources (see Sponsor group for details).
