World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)

Where:

Geneva, Switzerland

Time period:

on-going since 1997

Web link:

http://www.wbcsd.org/projects/pr_water.htm

Partners:

Working group of member companies

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

Stockholm International Water Institute

WBCSD Regional Network members

Other water stakeholders

Aims/Objectives:

To position the private sector as a proactive player in the management and use of freshwater.

To identify how to ensure future accesss to the amount and quality needed by industry, while balancing the needs of generations to come.

Measurable results and specific targets:

1997 published Industry, Freshwater and Sustainable Development in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The report presents case studies demonstrating that business has the technical and managerial skills, and the financial resources, to produce more goods and services using less water.

2000 published Partnerships in Practice. Six case studies exemplify how companies are entering into public-private partnerships with regulatory authorities to manage and conserve water - moving beyond rhetoric to action.

The WBCSD and its member companies participate in the Stockholm Water Symposium each year. In 2001, the WBCSD organised a facilitated dialogue on industrial water management.

Developed an annual Industry Water Prize in partnership with the Stockholm International Water Institute. The prize is awarded for outstanding achievements in managing and protecting the world's water resources. Past winners include Northumbria Water and General Motors de Mexico.

Implemented an outreach program to industry and other water stakeholders through regional networks. Partnerships have been developed with BCSD Mexico and other local organisations in Mexico. Water dialogue sessions have been organised in partnership with Philippine Business for the Environment and BCSD Malaysia.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

The WBCSD offers an ideal platform from which to address issues of value-driven innovation toward sustainable development. The organisation's reputation and credibility are based upon its broad perspective on responsible corporate behavior. For the WBCSD, issues of risk and public acceptability are not limited to particular companies or sectors.

WBCSD Council Projects are funded by WBCSD member companies.
