Aims/Objectives: |
| The Water Neutral Legacy Project addresses the pivotal role water and sanitation play in the eradication of poverty and disease. | | The project aims to ‘offset’ the addition water consumption resulting from the World Summit on Sustainable Development by funding projects that will contribute to the development of water and sanitation services throughout South Africa. | | By balancing the INPUT of the Summit's water consumption with an equal OUTPUT in water provision to water deprived communities in South Africa, the partners aim to ensure that the Summit is certified a water neutral event. | |
Measurable results and specific
targets: |
| To raise $170,000 through the sale of water neutral certificates to fund WSSD 2002 Water Offset Projects, which is the value of the water and sanitation services to be used by the 65,000 plus delegates that will attend the summit. | | To use the offset investment to fund 40 Roundabout play pumps for 40 water deprived communities in South Africa's rural areas as well as upgrading sanitation services in the township of Alexandra. | | To implement water and sanitation offset projects to identified communities by September 2003. | | To ensure the summit is certified as a water neutral event. | |
Implementation mechanisms
and further application: |
| A partnership between the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, South African Breweries, and Roundabout already exists; this partnership will implement the Water Neutral Legacy Project. | | The sanitation component will be implemented via the Alexandra Renewal Project. | | The water neutral trustees will ensure that the projects are implemented accordingly. | |
