Sustainable Communities

Lead Organisation:

SC Johnson

Where:

Global

Time period:

on-going since 1996

Web link:

Partners:

Local governments and non-governmental organisations in communities world-wide

Aims/Objectives:

To pursue a global commitment to the core value of "every place a better place because we are there" through innovative sustainability efforts taken in partnership with host communities throughout the world.

To continue to act as a catalyst for sustainable progress in our host communities through partnerships and initiatives that take advantage of the unique resources, ideas and innovations of each community.

Measurable results and specific targets:

Identified community leadership goals to guide our involvement in host communities.

Advanced sustainability efforts in communities throughout the world, including the US, South Africa, and the UK.

US: Partnered with local government and non-governmental organisations, businesses, and residents to launch Sustainable Racine initiative in 1996. Initiative has resulted in the creation of a long-term community sustainability vision supported and implemented by a broad spectrum of stakeholders. Racine commercial vacancy rates have fallen from 46% to 18%. A landmark agreement was made between four county municipalities which will share water and sewer costs and services to reduce costs for residents.

South Africa: Partnered with Unsung Heroes to identify and support local community leaders. Partnered with Good Shepherd Sisters to operate an Adult Education Center where over 1,000 women have been certified with employable skills.

UK: Partnered with local government to initiate "Community Day", an annual event in which over 500 SC Johnson employees participate in projects identified by local authorities and citizen groups.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

We recognise that sustainability will not look the same everywhere. Sustainability is driven and achieved by people in their own communities, each with its own source of ideas and innovations which propel sustainable efforts. Our sustainable development partnerships reflect this understanding.

Funding provided through the SC Johnson Fund.
