Aims/Objectives:

The Energy Wisdom Programme is a voluntary electricity industry initiative on sustainable development that provides a platform upon which electricity companies are able to demonstrate their proactive approach towards sustainable energy production, delivery and use. The EWP has the following objectives;

To achieve measurable improvements in energy efficiency and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in a cost-effective way.

To implement a voluntary scheme where individual electricity companies make commitments, choose their actions and report results;

To pursue a project-based approach where companies may report projects in the following categories: electricity generation, electricity transmission and distribution ; end-use energy efficiency, carbon sinks and other projects;

To ensure that EWP is an instrument which companies find useful in marketing their own innovative actions and enhancing their image.

Measurable results and specific targets:

Over 200 projects were reported in the first EWP cycle, comprising data from 1990 to 2000, mainly in the fields of renewable energy sources, combined heat and power, power plant efficiency improvements, upgrade of transmission or distribution lines, lighting applicances and equipment, etc;

Companies taking part in the EWP generated 591 TWh of power in the year 2000, from 152 GW of installed capacity (over 20% of the EU’s total), and owned 2.2 million km of transmission/distribution lines, serving some 63 million customers and making a total turnover of nearly Eur64 billion.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

Projects are reported through the EWP Technical Manual, which provides standardised procedures on how to report and suggests a methodology to account for greenhouse gas emissions reductions. The EWP Global Report with the results, comprising aggregate values only, together with examples of projects reported, will be published in spring 2002.
