Aims/Objectives:

To continuously improve the chemical industry’s health, safety and environmental performance for the benefit of our workers, our communities, and our numerous other stakeholders.

ICCA supports the Bahia Declaration, which builds on Chapter 19 of Agenda 21, as a framework for action and basis for developing future strategies for the sound management of chemicals.

Measurable results and specific targets:

Measurable reductions in the following: lost time injuries frequency rate; SO2, NOx, CO2, phosphor compounds, nitrogen compounds; chemical oxygen demand; and energy consumption and efficiency;

Established a series of Codes, Guidance notes and Checklists to assist companies to implement the commitment of Responsible Care in order to achieve continuous health, safety and environmental improvements.

Rules adopted by the leadership group; Rules communicated to member companies; Codes/guide published to timetable; Training sessions for member company coordinators held; Code or guidance implementation by members in progress; Mechanisms established for intercompany sharing of experience.

Specific targets for futher actions include extending product stewardship up and down the supply chain and extending product stewarship through capacity building;

Developing an improved implementation assurance process;

Identifying methods and indicators to compile world-wide chemical industry performance reports.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

Each national association is required to make an annual report on its progress in the implementation of Responsible Care. Eight fundamental features and thirty-four specific milestones serve as the basis for their reports. The progress of national associations is measured against each milestone.

Survey results are summarised in the ICCA Responsible Care Status Report.

Further application of Responsible Care will involve extending the initiative to all countries that manufacture chemicals, especially Saudi-Arabia, Russia, and China.

Responsible Care encourages its members to participate in the fast implementation of the Rotterdam Convention on Prior Informed Consent and the UNEP Persistent Organic Pollutants Stockholm Convention.
