Renewable Energy in Indonesia

Lead Organisation:

E7 Network of Expertise for Global Environment

Where:

Indonesia

Time period:

on-going since 1997

Web link:

Partners:

7 Leading Electricity Companies

Government of Indonesia

Community governments in eight Indonesian villages

Local suppliers and construction companies

Aims/Objectives:

The E7 is comprised of nine leading electricity companies from G7 countries with a mission to play an active role in global electricity issues and to promote sustainable development. The E7 Indonesia project aims to:

Promote sustainable energy development by providing sustainable electricity to rural villages in eastern Indonesia; and

Develop and implement an innovative, sustainable, and decentralised management concept for rural electrification.

Measurable results and specific targets:

Eight rural electrification schemes provide electricity to more than 4,000 people in eight remote communities in eastern Indonesia;

200 solar home systems, 4 micro-hydropower systems, and 1 solar/wind hybrid system have been implemented;

In relation to the fight against climate change, the calculated CO2 offset resulting from this project is expected to reach more than 33,000 tonnes.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

Participation of communities, NGOs, field officers, local choices, local voices, in each step of project development was a prerequisite for the electrification scheme development with successful implementation and a sustainable performance.

The rural electrification schemes are financially sustainable. A critical issue of rural electrification projects is the impact that operation and maintenance has on the financial sustainability of the facilities. The tariff is the centre of this issue: It must be affordable for the user while being able to cover the costs associated with the operation, maintenance, and management of the systems or facilities.

The project was completed in 2001. But the e7 will continue to monitor the facilities, the community socio-economics, and the relationship between them, for the next two years.
