Interactive Map Service (IMapS) - Providing Biodiversity Information Online

Lead Organisation:

IPIECA (International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association)

Where:

Global

Time period:

Ongoing

Web link:

http://www.ipieca.org/activities/biodiversity/imaps.html

Partners:

IPIECA

UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC)

Aims/Objectives:

Develop a user friendly, interactive interface to the detailed biodiversity data held by UNEP-WCMC and its partners. This takes the form of an online, interactive map service (IMapS) where the user defines the extent of the map and the parameters on display.

Provide immediate access to biodiversity and social data for use in emergency oil spill response situations and contingency planning and to provide key environmental information for strategic planning and environmental impact assessments.

Enable all the information to be made available as a free public resource, this is achieved by making IMapS an online service.

Measurable results and specific targets:

IPIECA IMapS, which provide detailed marine information, have been developed for the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions. Other IMapS are available covering the Indian Ocean, coral distribution, World Heritage Sites, Artic birds and forest poverty in Asia.

IPIECA members are currently funding work to expand the coverage of the IPIECA IMapS to include the Caribbean and Caspian regions, local partnerships and data are being investigated.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

Work will continue to expand the worldwide coverage of the IMapS, this will provide a tool to further assist the oil and gas industry in minimising its environmental impact.
