Aims/Objectives:

The Johannesburg Climate Legacy (JCL) aims to:

Assess and offset the carbon emissions footprint of the World Summit on Sustainable Development;

To encourage all delegates attending WSSD to offset the emissions generated as a result of their attendance at the Summit in Johannesburg;

To use funds raised to fund sustainble energy projects in South Africa that will offset the footprint and make the event Carbon Neutral;

To build capacity in climate mitigation projects, and transfer skills and knowledge;

To provide a model for future UN and other events from a climate perspective.

Measurable results and specific targets:

Specific targets for the JCL include:

To assess the footprint resulting from delegate's attendance at the Summit and identify carbon reducing projects in South Africa to offset this footprint;

To raise $5,000,000 to fund carbon reducing projects;

To deliver emissions reductions over a 5 year period, building capacity at the local level;

To ensure that the Summit is certified a Carbon Neutral Event.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

The JCL project is being implemented through the following steps:

A governing body was formed, an association constituted, a technical working group created, and a trust fund established;

Potential carbon reducing projects are screened;

Projects will be implemented, delivering emission reductions and ensuring that the Summit is certified a carbon neutral event.
