Aims/Objectives: |
| Accelerating Access represents a redoubling of efforts by UNAIDS in partnership with the private sector to assist countries in implementing comprehensive packages of care for their citizens living with HIV/AIDS. The initiative aims: | | To improve access to care, including treatments for opportunistic infections and antiretroviral therapy, in the hardest-hit regions of the world; and | | To work with governments, international organisations, private sector stakeholders, and others to find ways to broaden access to care while ensuring rational, affordable, safe and effective use of drugs for HIV/AIDS related illnesses. | |
Measurable results and specific
targets: |
| As of March 2002, 78 countries had indicated their interest in collaborating with UNAIDS on access to care and support. | | 26 countries have completed or are in the advanced stages of developing national care and treatment plans. | | 13 countries have reached agreement with manufacturers on significantly reduced drug prices in the context of national plans. | | The Accelerating Access Contact Group was established to share information and advise on accelerating access to HIV care, support and treatment. Regular summary reports are available on-line. | |
Implementation mechanisms
and further application: |
| Areas identified for intensified joint action include: | | Increase resources available for HIV/AIDS care and support through establishment of Global AIDS and Health Fund; | | Active support of regional initiatives; the development of regional plans for care, treatment and support is well under way in the Caribbean, Western and Southern Africa, and Southeast Asia; | | Increase activity in middle income countries; | | Increase the development of health care infrastructure; | | Encourage a greater sharing of ideas between UN system and private sector on research agenda, and establish improved mechanisms for communication of research in progress. | |
