Partners will be announced at the World Summit on Sustainable Development

   

Aims/Objectives:

To assist in realizing projects aligned with the NEPAD goals in the area of energy and electricity infrastructure projects.

To leverage financing from Eskom to promote sustainable energy and electricity projects and to provide a mechanism for international donor agencies to effectively channel their funds for infrastructure development projects in Africa.

To generate jobs. The development of energy infrastructure projects encourages the development of manufacturing and processing industries. The fund aims to support job creation in the energy, construction, telecommunications, information technology, and financial services sectors.

To serve as a leading example of a public-private partnership that both contributes to sustainable development in Africa and provides attractive returns to private sector partners.

   

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

The innovation of the African Energy Fund is the way in which public and private funding will be combined to improve the ability of all partners to deliver on their commitments to promote sustainable energy development in Africa.

Project partners will be announced at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, 26 August - 4 September 2002.
