George Oils

Aims/Objectives:

To promote sustainable development enterprises in the target communities.

To develop a viable and sustainable essential oils industry.

To promote organic farming through the use of organically grown products and the avoidance of fertilisers and weed killers in the growing process.

To generate employment, wealth, and human resources in local communities.

Measurable results and specific targets:

Two totally organic farms have been established: a 15-hectare geranium farm and a 2-hectare camomile farm.

Initially, the project provided jobs for 4 retrenched SAB hop farm employees. Currently there are 17 full-time employees, and a number of temporary workers are employed on a part-time basis.

The essential oils are distributed to the international cosmetic and aromatherapy industries, which serves as a good foreign currency earner.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

Efforts are being made to further develop a sustainable local industry around the core essential oils business in the future.
