Partners:

World Energy Council Members in 96 countries

Aims/Objectives:

The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction Pilot Programme is an initiative led by the World Energy Council to record, on an interactive electronic database, the measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions resulting from projects initiated by the global energy industry. The GHG Reduction Programme has the following objectives:

To demonstrate the efforts of the global energy industry to curb and reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and

To encourage more GHG reduction projects by showing the specific results that can be achieved through reduction efforts.

Measurable results and specific targets:

To build a world-wide inventory of GHG reduction projects. The inventory currently contains over 1000 projects.

February 1999 - Project started with an initial target of finding 1 Gigatonnes of greenhouse gas reductions by 2005.

April 2001 - Met initial target and set the current target at 2 Gigatonnes of greenhouse gas savings.

May 2002 - Charted 1.74 Gigatonnes of greenhouse gas savings as a result of over 1000 GHG reduction projects.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

Further application of the GHG ReductionPilot Programme will include broadening the use of the global database of GHG emissions. In particular, the database provides a unique source of information about projects in developing countries and transitional economies, which could be used for emissions trading and offset; and

Developing partnerships with companies, associations, NGOs and IGOs.
