Aims/Objectives:

The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) was formed in 1999 with the mission of ensuring that every child in the world will be protected against vaccine-preventable diseases. GAVI has established six strategic objectives to fulfill its mission:

Improve access to sustainable immunization services;

Expand the use of all existing, safe and cost-effective vaccines where they address a public health problem;

Support the national and international accelerated disease control targets for vaccine-preventable diseases;

Accelerate the development and introduction of new vaccines and technologies;

Accelerate R&D efforts for vaccines need primarily in developing countries; and

Make immunization coverage a centerpiece in international development efforts.

Measurable results and specific targets:

Developed the Vaccine Fund, a financial mechanism raises new resources for immunizations. 98% of the resources are channeled directly to health systems in the world's poorest countries.

Committed more than US$ 900 million from The Vaccine Fund to 60 developing country government health programs over five years;

Delivered more than 30 million vaccine doses to 27 countries, and transferred funds to national immunization programs in 34 countries;

Created a viable market in poor countries for new combination vaccines, a demand that vaccine manufacturers are gearing up to satisfy;

Developed a new protocol to assess the quality of immunization coverage data, the immunization Data Quality Audit (DQA);

Agreed to prioritize three new vaccines in late stages of development against viral diarrhoea, pneumonia, and meningitis.

Implementation mechanisms and further application:

GAVI implements its objectives through the following mechanisms:

Improving donor collaboration to ensure effective use of funding and to develop sustainable financing instruments for vaccine procurement;

Working with individual countries to strengthen national immunization services through enhanced coordination among governments and development partners;

Working with global vaccine industry partners to continue to provide the highest quality vaccines at the lowest appropriate prices and exploring a competitive negotiation mechanism to help bring new vaccines to the poorest populations;

Seeking to achieve a balance between three vaccine procurement objectives: increasing vaccine supply, making vaccines affordable, and encouraging private investment in research and development for vaccines especially needed in developing countries.

The Vaccine Fund is one of the financial tools available to GAVI to purchase vaccines, strengthen the immunization infrastructure, and support research.
